Snakes are a common fear amongst many individuals. Simply the look of these snakes are able to strike fear into the hearts of many individuals. However, for the most part, snakes are rather harmless to humans. Outside of a sore bite, these animals are not going to do much of anything to a human. However, there are some snakes that carry venom in their fangs, which is used to paralyze its pray. This is typically found in larger snakes, but there are different kinds of snakes throughout the world that have venom. This does not make the snake necessarily deadly though, only more painful. There are several snakes though that do make it onto the most venomous snakes in the world list and need to be avoided, as not only can these snakes cause serious pain and suffering, but even paralysis and death.
10: Rattlesnake
This is the only snake in all of the United States and the Americas that is actually on the list, so for individuals who are living in and around both North and South America, you don’t have to worry too much about poisonous snakes. The rattlesnake is also rather easy to identify, due to the rattle located on the back end of the tail.
This rattle shakes when it is disturbed and can be heard rather easily. There are different kinds of rattlesnakes in the list, but the most venomous snakes of the rattlers is the Eastern Diamondback. This snake has a hemotoxic venom, which destroys the tissue at the bite site and also degenerates the organs throughout the body, which prevents blood clotting.
There is some scarring where the snake bites, and it can even lead to the loss of the limb or possibly death. Usually, right after the snake bite it is going to lead to problems breathing, hemorrhaging and drooling. When properly treated though (time is very important with all venomous snakes), the death rate drops to under four percent.
9: Death Adder
Death Adder is found in Australia and New Guinea. This is one of the very few snakes on the list that actually huts other snakes. Death Adders look very similar to vipers as it has a triangular head and short, yet thick bodies.
A typical bite from the Death Adder injects anywhere from 400 to 100 mg of venom. The untreated bite from the snake can be one of the most dangerous in the world, as the venom is a neurotoxin.
A bite from this snake is going to cause paralysis and can cause death actually within six hours due to the respiratory system shutting down. Antivenin is extremely helpful in treating a bite and helps prevent any sort of serious conditions. Before Antivenin though, 50 percent of all individuals who received a snake bite eventually died.
8: Vipers
Part of the most venomous snakes, vipers are found throughout the world, but the most deadly of the bunch is the Saw Scaled Viper and the Chain Viper. Both of these snakes are found throughout the Middle East and Central Asia (such as China, India and southeast Asia). These snakes become angered quickly and can attack without warning.
The venom it injects causes pain immediately, followed by selling. Bleeding is a very common symptom, especially from around the gum line. Usually, there is a drop in blood pressure which might lead to the heart failing. Necrosis is generally limited to only around the bite area and extensive pain can last anywhere from two to four weeks. Death can happen up to 14 days after the bite (even later, in some cases).
7: Philippine Cobra
Appearing on the most venomous snakes in the world, the Philippine Cobra is one of the most deadly snakes in the entire world. While most cobra species actually are not that deadly in terms of amount of venom injected into the individual, the Philippine Cobra has the most dangerous venom of any snake in the world (it just doesn’t inject as much as other species).
This snake has venom that is a neurotoxin, which is going to cause breathing problems, respiratory paralysis and even death within 30 minutes of the bite. Generally, the bite only has limited tissue damage and scaring
6: Tiger Snake
Found on the list of most venomous snakes in the world, the Tiger Snake is found in Australia. This is an extremely dangerous snake and death can occur within 30 minutes after being bitten, but it usually is more around six to 24 hours. Before the creation of antivenin, fatality rates sat anywhere between 60 and 70 percent. Symptoms of the Tiger Snake bite is usually pain in the foot and neck, tingling, sweating and a rapid breathing.
5: Black Mamba
The Black Mamba is found throughout Africa and is extremely aggressive, which is what makes it so deadly. This is also the fastest snake on land in the world, with the ability to reach up to 20 kilometers an hour. The snakes do not just bite once as well, as they often bite up to 12 times in succession. A single bite has enough venom to kill up to 25 adults and is extremely fast acting.
The bite is going to inject up to 400 mg of venom. If the venom hits a major vein, only .25 mg is enough to kill about 50 percent of those who it bites. Usually, someone bitten would experiencing tingling in the mouth, double vision and confusion, plus fever. Without medical attention, the death rate is almost 100 percent. Death can take place, depending on the location in anywhere from 15 minutes to 3 hours.
4: Taipan
This is another snake found in Australia and it’s venom causes the victim’s blood to clot, which blocks off the arteries and shuts down blood flow. Before the creation of antivenin, there were no known survivors of the bite.
3: Blue Krait
The Blue Krait, also known as the Malayan, is a snake found in Southeast Asia. 50 percent of all bits are fatal, even when antivenin is used on the bite. This is another one of the most venomous snakes in the world that not only hunts other snakes, but other Blue Kraits as well. Death takes place within six to 12 hours of a pits, and even with medical attention, a permanent coma or brain death can take place.
2: Eastern Brown Snake
Located in Australia (if you are afraid of snakes, Australia might not be the place for you), only 1/14,000 of an ounce of this venom is able to kill a human. This snakes are located around populated areas in Australia, although less than half of its bites actually contain any venom.
1: Fierce Snake
Known as both the Fierce Snake and the Inland Taipan, this snake has the most poisonous venom in the world. One bite has 110 mg of venom, which is enough to kill 100 humans. It is 50 times more venomous than the Cobra snake. No fatalities have even been recorded from the snake though, as it is not aggressive, although a single bite would kill a human within 45 minutes. So it is always best to stay away from it.
